Kid’s fitness is a term that is often misunderstood or implemented incorrectly. To some, kid’s fitness means a heavy fitness routine that involves running long distances, push-ups and crunches. It is my belief that Kids fitness is both of these things but is also much more. Kid’s fitness is a holistic term that involves both exercise routines but also nutrition, mental health and well being as well ones general health. Kid’s fitness lays its foundations in a strong exercise routine that involve lots of variety. Kids fitness should be centered on play based exercise where games are incorporated into routines that offer basic challenges and rewards. These game based programs should also incorporate small groups as kids respond best when they are training with their peers.
Kid’s fitness should also incorporate healthy foods and an education program that explains what healthy eating is about. Healthy foods aren’t just about fruit and vegetables… Kid’s burn lots of energy as their kids fitness program involves lots of activity especially in the school system. Healthy foods should be about balance and portions and kids need to understand these concepts. Balance involves all food groups including fats and oils and sugar. These things are important but in isolation don’t consider all the elements of kid’s fitness. If we want to get the best out of our kids, kid’s fitness needs to be holistic and need to consider the child’s mental attitude, mental state, dietary requirements and fitness capacity.

The problem arises when kid’s fitness programs become monotonous or repetitive without any variety or stimulation. Kid’s fitness is not a stagnant process. Kid’s fitness is ever changing and evolving and requires innovative ideas and creativity from trainers and coaches to keep kids intrigued and engaged. Kid’s fitness should include the fundamental process of any fitness program with a warm-up, stretching, program, cool down and further stretching. The key is how you develop and integrate these fundamentals into your kid’s fitness program. Kid’s fitness should center on group activities in a game style setting where challenges are set and achieved. Kids respond best when they are challenged in a fun and interactive environment.

Kids want to be inspired and know that they can achieve goals that are realistic and timely. A kid’s fitness program needs to incorporate goals that can be achieved collectively amongst the whole group but also include some individual goals for each child. If you set goals that are too hard or goals that take too long to achieve, you will lose interest in your kid’s fitness program very quickly. The best thing you can do is ask your kids. Have conversations with them about their fitness levels, what they can do and what they can’t do, what they enjoy doing.
